New PCC John Tizard Visits Houghton Regis

New PCC visits Houghton Regis - John Tizard the newly elected Labour Police and Crime Commissioner visited Houghton Regis Town Council at the end of August. He gave a short presentation to town councillors before joining a meeting of the Combatting Crime Working Group. Councillors not on this committee then left and we were joined by representatives from the police and the CBCs Safer Communities and Partnership Team.

This working group meets once a month to discuss issues raised by residents and to get feedback from the police and the CBC. The location of CCTV cameras are decided and the policework undertaken under the OpHana scheme planned.

John Tizard gave an interesting insight into how he will approach his role by emphasising that he is representing the public to the police, not the police to the public. Not one to waste time, he did exactly that by taking up an issue with the police representative, that had been raised in the first part of the meeting.

He addressed the concerns about antisocial behaviour and retail crime. He would like to see voluntary organisations working together. Later he addressed the public order disturbances that had recently shocked us all. The police service had responded very well and the policy decision to keep the public fully informed had proved successful. Members of the working group formally thanked the police for meeting the challenge of these events.

A very successful meeting.
